The interminable wait was fraying Sarah’s nerves. She couldn’t help but remember the last time she’d been in an emergency room, waiting for news. Kris had died that day, turning Sarah’s world upside down. Thankfully Kat wasn’t in physical danger, but Sarah still knew how helpless and scared Lauren must be feeling.
The girls had returned from their snack run a while ago, and were now intermittently staring at the floor or the TV, which was set to a twenty-four-hour news channel. It had been nearly three hours since they’d arrived, and they were all exhausted. Despite their fatigue, everyone’s head popped up when a voice said, “Sarah?”
Sarah rose to meet Sharon Keller, one of the therapists she knew from the county mental health center. “Sharon. How come you’re here at this hour?” The two women shook hands.
“It seems to be due to a providential stroke of luck,” Sharon replied with a smile. “This just happens to be my on-call weekend. Several of our clinical social workers do after-hours rotations here for emergencies. I’m so glad I was here for Kat. It saved the poor thing from having to rehash her life story to a stranger.”
“Thank goodness,” Sarah replied, grateful that Kat was in good hands. “How is she?”
“She’s much calmer and is responding to us. Mrs. Emerson asked me to come get you. She’d like you to be there to hear what’s going on.”
Sarah glanced over at the girls, who were hanging on Sharon’s every word. Bridget looked like she might explode out of her skin. Sarah called the girls over.
“Girls, this is Ms. Keller. She came out to let us know Kat is doing fine. Mrs. Emerson asked me to go on back there, so I think it’s time you headed home.”
“But can’t I see her?” Bridget protested.
“Not just yet, sweetheart. She needs time and space right now.” Sarah knew it was killing Bridget to be so helpless. She loved Kat; that much was obvious. “Try not to worry, okay? I’ll tell her you all were here. I’m sure she’ll contact you as soon as she can.”
Bridget’s eyes were moist. “Please tell her…”
Sarah nodded. “I know, honey. I’ll tell her.” To the others she said, “Why don’t you call your parents and let them know you’re on your way? Who drove here?”
“I did.” Jordan raised her hand. “I’ll drop them off at home. We can go back to school tomorrow to get Bridget’s car.”
“Sounds like a good plan,” Sarah agreed. “Here, let me have your phone for a sec.” Sarah took Jordan’s phone and typed in her cell number. “Please text me when everyone is home safe, okay?”
“I will,” Jordan replied.
Natasha, who had been very quiet, finally spoke up. “Tell Kat we’re thinking of her, okay?”
“Count on it. Be careful going home, and try to get some sleep. I’ll see you on Monday.”
The girls left, and Sarah had to restrain herself from running to Lauren and Kat. She and Sharon walked through the emergency room to the last bay on the left.
